In late 1991, God led Rod and Anne Thorpe to Newcastle, NSW, to pioneer a new YWAM centre. As partners in this pioneering vision they asked David and Carolyn Stephenson to pray about joining them – and they did!
YWAM Newcastle officially opened in July 1992 and went on to run their first DTS in 1994. 20 years later they are now training up to 100 students per year and seeing 1,000’s of salvations.
Through the years they have seen many staff come and go, but are now blessed with 60 full-time workers!
They are passionate about seeing scores of young people come to know Christ each year and one of the many ways they do this is through the ‘Youth Street’ ministry.
Back in 2000, God started speaking to David about being a Godly community operating right in the heart of the city – “taking the walls out of YWAM”.
Youth Street was officially launched in 2001 as a city-wide project with a primary focus of building community and championing young people within Newcastle. The dream has been to multiply that vision; of a youth orientated missions community, across the nations, and they are now seeing God bring that dream to life!
