Recently Victoria, South Australia and Tasmania joined together as YWAM ‘Southlands’. Ray and Shiree Lind sensed the Lord was rearranging where they were (in Adelaide), and was sending them to Tasmania to re-pioneer the work of Ywam there. Ephesians 3 is on their hearts and Love Tasmania is their catch cry. They have a real desire to see the people of Tasmania come into their full destiny, through prayer, healing and worship. This team officially launched in February 2012.
The original team that had initially started a Ywam location in Tasmania begun with the Lucerne family. They were sent out from Ywam Canberra on 1st February 1985.
Families, Broken Homes, Abused Kids
Four days later, after an unforgettable, overnight crossing on the Empress of Australia Ferry they arrived in Devonport. The Lucerne’s were warmly welcomed by the hospitality of friends Dave and Ann Langlois and many others over the weeks following. A two-storey house in West Hobart became YWAM Tasmania’s first base and the hub of the initial exciting times of all night fasting and prayer, street work and open nights where the entry fee was a plate of food and guest speakers powerfully ministered. Hospitality seemed to be the key that opened many doors for ministry.
In these first years God was directing YWAM to minister His love to families, broken homes and abused kids.
Isaiah 61 became God’s encouraging promise and foundational word for every outreach pursuit over the next 27 years.
God directed their focus to a closed nation helping them establish a model farm which is now able to feed 2,000 young, undernourished children each week. They also focused on Mongolia, sending out a couple, long-term, to open up ministry for disabled children and later, further training of Mongolian staff.
YWAM Tasmania has also been a pioneer in classical music training and performances. Christine Lucerne co-led this ministry, influencing some world class performers to seek God’s will for their skills and calling.
YWAM Tasmania reached out into many nations: East Timor, Laos, Indonesia, India, Spain, Burma, Pacific Islands, Europe, Russia and the list goes on. As in the Bible story of the loaves and fishes, Jesus has taken the little, blessed it, and is using it to feed thousands through the work taking place in Tasmania and to the ends of the earth.
YWAM Southlands Tasmania is now located on a magnificent property on the outskirts of the city of Hobart. It is up on a ridge with wondrous views across the ocean, lakes, mountains and valleys.
It’s a re-pioneering situation
YWAM Southlands Tasmania have the exciting opportunity to begin new things, and with the advantage of God’s blessing over YWAM, they are starting in a place of huge favour.
The base leaders dream of being totally self sufficient; organic, generating their own power, growing their own food. They are still praying for the provision of solar power sets, wind turbines, vegetable gardens and water tanks as well as lots of inventive people who want to create new things in this whole area. There is so much opportunity.
They still stand firm on the many words they have received from the Lord and are expectant to see each one be fulfilled in God’s timing.
They include prophecies about times of harvest, a reaping of what has already been sown. Prophecies of healing and restoration; that their new home will be a place of hope, refuge, healing and most importantly a place of prayer.
They are passionate about training, equipping and releasing a new wave of Tasmanians into missions, both short-term and long-term.
YWAM Southlands Tasmania dreams of growing and serving the local church and the city in a way that has yet to be seen, as well as establishing 2theCORE; a condensed form of DTS for churches or youth groups.
They want to pioneer Mission Adventures and Kings Kids, host holiday camps for young people taking them on short-term outreaches and use ‘Love Tasmania’; their evangelistic initiative, along with regular worship and prayer meetings to reach those who do not know Jesus as their personal saviour and encourage Tasmanians to step into their God-breathed destiny. They are trusting God to see miraculous breakthough and freedom from addictions.
Tasmania is often referred to as ‘the forgotten state.’ Separated from the main island of Australia, they have faced a lot of rejection and isolation. The heart of YWAM Southlands Tasmania is to love on the people of this breath-taking island; to spill the unconditional and eternal love of the Father onto these precious people and the church by visiting every town. They also have a heart to see healing and restoration come to Tasmania.
It is an incredible privilege to build God’s Kingdom here on earth! Whether you are currently serving within the YWAM family or not, we would like to invite you to come and join us in this vision to see Tasmania encounter the love of God.
“The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good tidings to the poor, He has sent me to heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound. To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord – and day of vengeance of our God – to comfort all who mourn.
I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God, for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with ornaments and a bride adorns herself with jewels. For as the earth brings forth its bud, as the garden causes the things that are sown in it to spring forth, so the Lord God will cause righteousness and praise to spring forth before all the nations.”
– Isaiah 61: 1-2, 10-11
